By late afternoon, the island changes character.
The heat that spent all day sitting on the fields begins to loosen. The palms go black against the sky. Somewhere beyond them, the road carries people home, animals are brought in, tools are put down, and the long practical business of the day starts giving way to evening.
For a short while, the land catches fire without burning.
That was the moment here.
Not sunset as spectacle, but the hour around it. The field still holding warmth. Coconut trees standing where they have stood through storms, harvests, dry seasons, and generations of people passing beneath them.
Bohol looked almost impossibly beautiful in that light.
Then, as always, the colour began to leave.
The palms stayed.
