Giambologna’s Rape of the Sabine Women does not allow the eye to settle easily. Three figures rise through one another in a twisting column of marble, each movement dependent on the force being exerted somewhere else. From below, the sculpture feels almost unstable, as though the stone itself has been caught in the middle of an action it cannot resolve.

What held me was the contradiction inside the craftsmanship. The marble is astonishingly controlled, every hand, muscle, turn, and point of contact considered with extraordinary precision, yet the subject is one of violence and possession. Beauty and brutality occupy the same material, which makes the work difficult to admire passively.

I photographed it in black and white because colour felt unnecessary. Light was enough to reveal the tension between the figures, the pressure carried through their limbs, and the strange ability of stone to preserve an act of force for centuries after the hands that carved it were gone.
