Konoko - Hand Rolled Botanical Smudge Incense
Forest Herbs & Sacred Resin
Intention: Threshold - Cleansing & Release
Konoko is a green, resinous botanical smudge incense stick made with sage, West Indian bay, rosemary, frankincense and benzoin.
Created around the idea of crossing a threshold, Konoko belongs to moments when something needs to shift: the beginning or end of a day, the clearing of a room, the close of one experience before another begins, or simply the feeling that the atmosphere around you has become too crowded with what came before.
Its character is dry, green and grounded. Aromatic leaves give way gradually to warmer resin, creating an atmosphere that feels less like fragrance placed into a room and more like the air changing around you.
Konoko is an incense for making space.
6 hand-rolled, botanical smudge incense sticks on sun-dried cocoyea stems.
Scent character: Green · Herbaceous · Resinous · Dry · Warm

The Name
Konoko comes from Lokono, an Arawakan language historically spoken in Trinidad and across parts of the Guianas and northern South America. The word refers to forest or jungle, particularly dense vegetation held beneath continuous canopy.
That understanding of forest is what drew us to the name.
There is a particular sensation that comes with entering dense forest. The temperature changes. Light becomes filtered. Sound behaves differently. The body registers the shift before the mind necessarily gives it language.
You have crossed into another atmosphere.
For us, that became the deeper idea behind Konoko.
The forest is not used here as decoration or as shorthand for wilderness. It represents a threshold: a place where one set of conditions gives way to another and where entering requires a small adjustment of attention.
Konoko carries that movement into the home. The incense begins with the clarity of aromatic leaves and gradually settles into the warmth of resin, allowing the atmosphere to change as the burn continues.
It is less about leaving something behind completely than creating enough space to recognise that you have moved beyond it.
Intention
Threshold: Cleansing & Release
Konoko is intended for moments of transition.
It can be burned when opening a space, closing the day, beginning a practice, clearing a room after activity, or whenever the atmosphere feels as though it is still carrying more than it needs to.
Cleansing, for us, is not about declaring a space impure or trying to erase what happened there. It is the simpler act of allowing something to move through rather than remain indefinitely.
Release works in much the same way.
Not everything needs to be carried forward.
Konoko creates a sensory marker between what was and what comes next, giving the transition enough presence to be felt.
Scent & Composition
Konoko moves from dry aromatic leaves into warm resin. Garden sage and West Indian bay give the composition its green, herbaceous body, while rosemary introduces a clearer, sharper edge. Frankincense and benzoin deepen the burn with resinous warmth, grounding the greener materials without making the incense heavy or sweet.
The result is forested and cleansing in character, with enough dryness and resin to keep the composition rooted.
Incense Composition
Sage · West Indian Bay · Rosemary · Frankincense · Benzoin
Botanical Crust
Sage · West Indian Bay · Frankincense Resin
Each Konoko stick is finished with a botanical crust of sage, West Indian bay, Rosemary, and frankincense resin.
The leaves create a visibly green, textured surface while pieces of natural resin add warmer variation and a direct material connection to the composition beneath.
Because the crust is made from real botanical material and natural resin, colour, particle size and distribution naturally vary from stick to stick.
Natural Stem
Sun-Dried Cocoyea Stem
Cocoyea is the slender midrib of the coconut palm leaf, a familiar Caribbean material traditionally used in everyday making.
Light, strong and naturally fibrous, it forms the centre of each incense stick and gives the finished piece a material character rooted in the landscape around us.
It is one of the quiet details that makes Nadi Sangama incense distinctly its own.
Made in Studio Nadi Sangama
Konoko is made by hand in small batches in Studio Nadi Sangama in Trinidad & Tobago.
The leaves and natural resins are prepared and blended with untreated mixed wood material and naturally derived binders to form the incense itself.
The cocoyea stems are prepared separately. The midribs are removed from coconut palm leaves, cleaned, sun-dried and cut to length before each incense stick is formed around them by hand. Once rolled, the sticks are finished with their botanical crust and left to dry slowly before being prepared for use.
This process allows the construction of the incense to remain visible and material-led from beginning to end. The aromatic blend, botanical surface and natural stem are all integral parts of the finished stick rather than decorative elements added afterward.
There is no synthetic fragrance added to create an artificial impression of forest, herbs or resin. Konoko takes its aromatic character directly from the botanical materials and natural resins within the composition.
The finished Konoko formulation has been tested non-toxic and contains no synthetic fragrance, no charcoal and no synthetic additives.
Natural Character
Konoko is made from botanical materials that naturally vary from one harvest and batch to another.
Differences in the colour, texture and distribution of the botanical crust are expected, along with small variations between individual hand-rolled sticks. Garden sage, West Indian bay and frankincense resin will not appear in precisely the same proportions across every surface.
The aromatic character also develops throughout the burn rather than remaining fixed. Green, herbal and resinous notes may move forward or recede as the ember passes through different parts of the composition.
These variations belong to the materials themselves and are part of working without synthetic fragrance systems designed for exact replication.
Burning
Place the stick securely in a heat-resistant incense vessel.
Light the botanical end and allow the flame to establish briefly before gently blowing it out. A glowing ember should remain, releasing a steady stream of aromatic smoke.
Allow the incense to burn naturally or extinguish it once the desired atmosphere has been reached.
Because the surface contains real leaves and resin, the character of the smoke may shift subtly as the ember moves through the stick.
Always burn in a well-ventilated space, away from drafts and combustible materials. Never leave burning incense unattended. Keep away from children and pets, and allow all ash and embers to cool fully before disposal.
Storage
Keep incense wrapped in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, heat, and excessive humidity.
After opening, rewrap the remaining sticks carefully to preserve their aromatic character and protect the botanicals from moisture.
