Taken at Paliokastro Beach, Crete, Greece.

Paliokastro sits beneath the road between Heraklion and Chania, tucked into a small cove where the cliffs pull close around the water. From above, the highway cuts directly across the landscape, while below it people swim, gather along the shore, and spend the afternoon almost unconcerned with the traffic passing overhead.

That collision is what interested me. The remains of a Venetian fortress once guarded the rock above the beach, an old limekiln still stands near the shore, and now a concrete bridge carries another generation across the same piece of coast. None of these layers erase the others. They simply accumulate, which is often how Crete reveals its history: not preserved at a distance, but lived around.

I took the photograph because the cove felt completely itself despite everything built around it. The cliffs still hold the water close, the sea keeps working against the stone, and beneath the road the beach carries on with the ordinary intimacy of a place people have continued to use.
