Taken in Sicily, Italy.

The fields had already been cut back to gold, leaving the land exposed beneath the summer heat. Beyond them, the mountain rose in layers of stone and dry earth, carrying the same burnt tones as the fields below.

What drew me into the scene was its severity. Sicily can be lush in places, but here the land felt stripped down to structure: grain, rock, fence posts, distance. The old concrete markers in the foreground gave the landscape a human measure, small interventions against something much older and larger.

There is a particular beauty in land after it has given what it can for the season. Nothing feels empty. The fields hold the memory of work, the mountain holds the weather, and the whole landscape seems to be resting under the weight of the sun.
