Some places seem to arrange themselves around the water. This palm had grown out over the shoreline at an angle that felt almost intentional, its trunk carrying the whole crown toward the sea while a simple swing hung beneath it, just above the sand.
I liked the ease of the scene. Nothing in it felt decorative, even though it could have been. The tree had been shaped by wind and exposure, the swing by someone’s hands, and the shoreline by tide after tide. Together they made the kind of place people instinctively move toward, where shade, water, and a place to sit are enough to change the pace of a day.
The photograph holds that sense of island life at its most uncomplicated: a tree leaning into open water, a swing waiting beneath it, and the feeling that there is nowhere else you need to be.
