Ajoupa 01 - Wild Clay Vessel + Candle
Hand-Formed · Beeswax · Coconut Wax
Ajoupa is a hand-formed wild clay vessel and candle made entirely in Studio Nadi Sangama in Trinidad & Tobago.
Each vessel begins with locally gathered clay, processed in small batches before being shaped by hand, dried and pit-fired. The candle is then poured directly into the finished vessel using a blend of local beeswax and plant-based coconut wax, with no added fragrance, paraffin or synthetic wax additives.
The result brings two material processes together in one object. Earth is shaped and strengthened through fire, then returned to the home as a vessel made to shelter flame.
Its surfaces are intentionally allowed to carry the character of that making. Mineral variation, smoke markings, subtle differences in colour and form, and the traces left by open-fire firing make every Ajoupa distinct.

The Name
Ajoupa is a word with a long history in Trinidad and the wider Caribbean, referring to a simple shelter or dwelling associated with the region’s First Peoples and later vernacular building traditions. Traditionally made from materials available close at hand, the ajoupa belongs to an understanding of shelter shaped directly by land, climate and necessity.
We chose the name because the idea of shelter sits naturally within the candle.
The wild clay vessel is the outer body. It surrounds the wax, gives the flame a physical home and carries within its surface the earth and fire that formed it. Once lit, that relationship begins to move outward through warmth and light.
There is something elemental in that exchange. Shelter is usually understood as protection from the elements, but here earth becomes shelter for an element. Clay that has already passed through fire returns to hold fire again.
For us, Ajoupa carries that relationship between shelter and flame.
The shelter is not separate from the light it holds. One gives the other a place to exist.
That relationship also belongs naturally within Nadi Sangama, where material is never treated as passive. Earth, water, hand, fire and use continually act upon one another. Ajoupa begins in the ground, passes through those transformations, and returns as an object made to bring warmth and light into the places where we live.
Made in Studio Nadi Sangama
Every Ajoupa vessel is made by hand in Studio Nadi Sangama from wild clay gathered in Trinidad & Tobago.
Rather than beginning with a standardized commercial ceramic body, we collect and process the clay ourselves in small batches. Its mineral composition, colour, texture and working character vary naturally, and we allow those qualities to remain part of the finished vessel.
Once formed and thoroughly dried, each piece is pit-fired. Flame, smoke, fuel, heat and atmosphere move directly around the clay during the firing, producing surfaces that cannot be predetermined or repeated exactly.
One vessel may carry deep carbon-darkened areas while another reveals warmer earth tones, reds, browns or softened greys. Small shifts in profile, texture and surface remain as evidence of the material, the hand and the fire.
These variations are not decorative effects added later. They are part of the vessel’s history.
Wax & Wick
The candle poured into Ajoupa is made with a blend of local beeswax and plant-based coconut wax.
Beeswax gives the candle substance, warmth and a direct connection to the landscape in which the vessel is made. Coconut wax softens the composition and helps create a more balanced container candle, allowing the wax to respond more readily to heat while retaining the character of beeswax.
The candle contains no paraffin and no added fragrance. Its presence comes from the materials themselves: warm wax, clay and flame rather than a perfume designed to dominate the room.
Each Ajoupa is fitted with a natural-fiber wick selected for the dimensions of the vessel and the behaviour of the wax blend. Because the vessels are made by hand rather than produced as perfectly identical containers, wick performance is considered as part of the development of each Ajoupa form.
The wick, wax and clay therefore function as one system. The vessel contains the heat, the wax feeds the flame, and the wick regulates how that relationship unfolds over the course of the burn.
Natural Character
Ajoupa is made from materials that naturally vary.
Wild clay changes in mineral character and colour. Pit firing leaves different traces of smoke and carbon on every piece. Beeswax can also show subtle natural variation in colour and appearance between batches.
These differences mean that the Ajoupa you receive will not be an exact duplicate of the vessel shown in photographs.
We consider that individuality fundamental to the object. Each piece carries evidence of where its materials came from and what happened to them during making.
Burning & Care
Before each burn, trim the wick to approximately 5 mm and remove any loose wick material from the wax.
Place Ajoupa on a stable, level and heat-resistant surface away from drafts. During the burn, allow the wax around the flame enough time to warm and open naturally rather than repeatedly lighting the candle for very short periods.
Because Ajoupa is made from hand-formed wild clay, the vessel may become warm during use. Do not handle or move it while the candle is burning or while the wax remains hot.
Keep the wax pool free of spent wick, matches and other debris. If the flame becomes unusually large, begins smoking heavily or appears unstable, extinguish the candle, allow it to cool completely and trim the wick before relighting.
Never leave a burning candle unattended. Keep it away from curtains, paper and other flammable materials, as well as children and pets.
Discontinue burning before the flame reaches the very bottom of the vessel or the remaining wax becomes excessively shallow. Allow the vessel and wax to cool completely before handling.
Once the candle has been fully used, residual wax may be removed carefully if you wish to keep the vessel. Avoid soaking the wild clay or placing it in a dishwasher. Clean gently with minimal water and allow it to dry thoroughly.
After the Flame
Ajoupa was made to continue beyond the life of the candle.
Once the vessel has cooled completely, remaining wax and wick material can be removed gently.
What remains is a hand-formed, pit-fired object from Studio Nadi Sangama, able to continue in the home as an incense holder, a vessel for small dry objects, or simply as an object in its own right.
The flame passes. The vessel remains.
